!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . And this is what they gave me. Base model VW Jetta. It has a Turbo but I have no clue if it is the 1.4L or the 1.8L turbo. This is my very first time driving a VW. I only drove it half a mile so far so I have no opinion yet.

Should be comfy at least? IIRC these are built on one of those shared VAG platforms?

They put a turbo in the base model? Surprising. Usually the base models have gotten the 2.0 and later the 2.5. I haven’t kept up with most of their stuff lately. They all seem to be executing the usual VW plan: Be 20% nicer than the competition to start, then start disintegrating at the 5-year mark :D

Nah, you did alright. They’re fine enough cars, provided you don’t have to own one.

Yeah. Now ALL Jetta’s are turbo. no more 2.slow or 2.5. At least thats how it is in Canadia.

Now there is a 1.4 turbo and a 1.8 turbo. no idea which one this is but I’m guessing 1.4

But keep running. My ‘01 Golf had the 2.slow engine in it with a 5-speed, and even though the interior went to absolute hell, it ran and ran and ran. I was still on the original clutch when the drunk totaled it. Not me. I was asleep. The car was on the street.

I voluntarily just purchased a Golf with the 1.8t. It doesn’t suck.

The Jettas are a lot cheaper on the inside, tho.

I had a Beetle for a rental a year ago when my Fiat was in the shop, that is after I brought back the fetid Chrysler 200 they gave me (the Sebring based 200, not the decent new 200) and asked for literally anything else. It wasn’t bad, and even a little fun.

Preaching to the choir...about to take my '01 Passat out. It leaks, the interior is showing its age (leather still intact), but still going!

You didn’t lose the lottery. VWs are pretty nice places to be, especially if you don’t have to maintain the car. You could certainly do worse with a Nissan versa or Chevy Spark.

I rented a Kia Rio to drive from San Antonio to Corpus Christi in order to pick up my second car from my old apartment. That thing was the worst car by far I had ever driven. It had 150 miles on it when I got it, it was all over the road, on dead straight Texas highways, hell my 1997 was a luxury car compared to this POS. If that had been my first impression of that company, it’d be safe to say I’d never buy a Kia/Hyundai.

I think almost everything VW currently sells in the US has a turbo strapped to it, and I imagine Canada would probably be the same. The 1.4T is the base, then it steps up to the 1.8T, and then certain models are graced with the 2.0T (GTI, GLI, Golf R, Beetle R-line, etc.). In fact, the much-forgotten Eos only comes with the 2.0T.

A few exceptions remain: the Passat V6, for example.
